Raila Odinga Early Life and age
Born on 7th January 1945, Raila Amollo Odinga is 76 years old. He was born to Mr Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mrs Mary Juma Odinga. The politician was born at Anglican Church Missionary Society Hospital.
He is the son of the first vice president of Kenya who served under president Jomo Kenyatta that is Jaramogi Odinga Oginga.
After reaching a school age he was taken to Kisumu Union Primary School and Maranda High School where he studied there until the year 1992.
Raila would later be transferred by his father Jaramogi Odinga Oginga to study at Herder institution in Germany. Here, Raila spent 2 years to study.
He would later get a scholarship which saw him attend Technical School, Magdeburg. This is where RAO graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Welding.
RAO later jetted back in the country in 1970 where in 1971 he came with a full decision that saw him establish East African Spectre which was by then called Equipment Construction & Erection Ltd.
In the year 1974 RAO got the managerial job for KEBS that is Kenya Bureau of Standards where he served as a manager for group standards. RAO got promotion in 1974 where he got the deputy director until 1982 where his detention came in.
Raila Odinga Profession and Politics
Who is Raila Odinga? Raila Odinga is a Kenyan politician who manged to served in the Kenyan top Parliament seat as Prime Minister. Raila Odinga served as the Prime Minister from the year 2008 to the year 2013.
Back into times remember, RAO (Raila Amollo Odinga) was detained in 1982 where he was under house arrest that lasted for 7 months. This was after evidence find out that he was connected with the failed 1982 presidential coup.
By then it was late president Daniel Arap Moi reign. This saw him later being charged for treason and later detained for 6 years without a trial.
During his time in prison where he was serving his 6 years of jail term, it is between those 6 years that Raila Odinga’s mother Mrs Mary Juma Odinga died in 1984.
According to sources, Raila Odinga once claimed that this was the most painful experience he has never encountered.
He said that it took two months for prison wardens to let him know of his beloved mother’s death.
Raila was released on 6th of February 1988 only for him to be rearrested in September 1988 for his pro-democracy and human rights agitation.
Remember the country was also battling poor governance and by then it was a single party rule.
RAO encounters with the authoritarian government generated an aura of intrigue about him.
It was probably due to this that Raila’s political followers, nicknamed him as “Agwambo” which in Luo Language means “The Mystery” or “Unpredictable”, or “Jakom”, which means chairman.
He has suffered the ups and down of politics until 2012 where he headed National Super Alliance(NASA).
He would then use this party to run for presidency in 2017 where elections mischief came out which made the court to nullify everything.
Remember this time he had run for presidency the 4th time. His determination will see him try his presidential luck in election year of Kenya 2022.
Apart from his father, Odinga is identified as one of the leading forces behind the democratization process of Kenya.
Raila Odinga ran for Langata parliamentary seat which he won and took the Langata MP office from 1992 to 2007.
Let’s also not forget that he ran for presidency in 2017 but lost it to the current outgoing president Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.
Raila Odinga Lifestyle and Family
Raila Odinga’s wife is Ida Odinga with whom they are survived with 4 children that is the late Fidel who was born 1973 and died in 2015 after consumption of what was alledged to be a poisoned alcohol,Rosemary Odinga who was born in 1977, Raila Jr who was born 1979 and Winnie Odinga who was born 1990, remember she doubles up as his personal assistant.
