Rihanna Honoured as Hero in Barbados
Rihanna was quite privileged to be honoured as the new hero in the Barbados era.
That feeling you get the moment you’ve finally found your family’s surname on the Builders of Barbados Wall in the Golden Square Freedom Park!
Rihanna who is a Barbadian super star will be Barbados’ newest National Hero in town!
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced that global icon Robyn Rihanna Fenty will be conferred with the honour of National Hero of Barbados!
Barbados officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and become the world’s newest republic as Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as president thus becoming the first president of the Caribbean Island of Barbados.
During the event, which coincided with the country’s 55th anniversary of independence, Prince Charles acknowledged the “appalling atrocity of slavery” the Caribbean island suffered.
In Rihanna was declared a national hero at the event, with the new prime minister saying: “May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation.”
They say “anywhere in the world you go, you will find a Bajan!” And perhaps one of the most well-known Bajans of today is none other than our very own Rihanna or RiRi, as we call her!⠀
A true “global citizen with Bajan roots,” Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in ‘MyBarbados’ and she grew up in her close-knit neighbourhood, with a love for singing and dreams bigger than anyone could imagine.⠀
In 2005, after a legendary meeting with Def Jam, the name Rihanna was about to be on everyone’s lips as her debut single, ‘Pon De Replay’ was an instant success, reaching #2 on the Billboard singles chart.
Rihanna went from the unknown island girl from Barbados, to the girl everyone wanted to know about, and just last week, she was ranked #10 by @billboard in their Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Artists!⠀
There are so many ways to describe Rihanna including singer, actress, makeup mogul, fashion icon, designer, billionaire, entrepreneur, philanthropist, humanitarian, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and, of course, Bajan! Despite of all this, she’s still the darling of Barbados and Bajans have a special place in their hearts for her.⠀
For Bobbyn, Barbados will always be “home” and a special place where she often returns. In 2017, the street where you can still find her childhood home was renamed “Rihanna Drive,” and just after the day of its unveiling, she wrote in a heart-warming post about Westbury, “I thank you for all that you’ve poured into my life and the woman I am! It takes a village, and I’m glad my village was you!!!” ⠀
She has accomplished so much and impacted so many lives in such a short period of time. It reads like a fairytale, and the story is still to be continued.
